How 2 player chess works here
This page opens the board in two-player mode, sometimes called pass and play or local multiplayer. Both players use the same screen: White moves, then hands the device over, then Black moves. Nobody needs an account, a second device or an internet connection once the page has loaded.
- Decide who plays White. White always moves first.
- Tap a piece to see where it can go, then tap the square you want. Dragging works too.
- Pass the device. If you are facing each other across a table, switch on Turn the board after each move so the player whose turn it is always sees their pieces at the bottom.
- Keep taking turns until checkmate, stalemate or a draw. New game resets the board.
Tips for playing chess with a friend on one screen
- Tablets and laptops work best with the automatic board turn switched on. On a phone, passing it back and forth with the board fixed is often easier.
- Teaching someone? Leave Show legal moves on. A new player can tap any piece and immediately see every square it may move to.
- Agree on take-backs before you start. Undo takes back one move at a time, so it is handy for casual games and lessons.
- Save a good game with Copy moves (PGN) and paste it into any chess program to look back over it later.
Is this online multiplayer?
No. Both players need to be in the same place, using the same device. There is no online matchmaking or chat, which also means there is nobody else to talk to and nothing to sign up for. If you are on your own, play against the computer instead.
