About Chess Unblocked
Chess Unblocked is a free chess game for the moments when you want a quick game without installing an app or making an account.
What it does and does not do
You can play a computer opponent at three levels or a friend on the same device, with the complete rules of chess, undo, board flipping and a copyable move list. It does not offer online play, ratings or chat. Keeping it focused keeps it fast and easy to use.
How it is built
The site is static HTML, CSS and a small amount of JavaScript, hosted on Netlify. There is no server-side code, database or login.
- Computer opponent: a small negamax search with alpha-beta pruning and piece-square tables, written for this site and run in your browser.
- Chess rules and move validation: chess.js by Jeff Hlywa, BSD 2-Clause licence.
- Piece artwork: the "cburnett" set by Colin M.L. Burnett, used under the CC BY-SA 3.0 licence.
